Maine Wildlife Park

Since July melted into August we've been outside doing things trying to soak up every last bit of summer. Jack starts preschool in September, (excuse me.... sorry about that, just had to grab a box of tissues!!!) and then the cold weather comes, so we're trying to make the most of every free day we have as a family.

Last fall when John was traveling for work in Gray, he spotted signs for the Maine Wildlife Park. He called me and told me to bookmark their site for a future visit in the Spring or Summer. We drove up this past Sunday and had a great day. The weather in Kennebunk was beautiful, but a little cool. In Gray, however, it was pretty hot, but definitely nice and sunny. Also,when we pulled in we were treated to quite a surprise! It turns out that the park was hosting an native American Pow-Wow!

Well. Jack has become quite the fan of Peter Pan. He likes to hear the story every night before bed, and we also have a borrowed copy of the DVD. If he's lucky, he may get a of copy of his own for his birthday (his PIRATE birthday party!). Now this movie he's been watching and the book call Native American's "Indians" and some other things, and all along we've tried to correct Jack and ask him to say "Native Americans" but wouldn't you know it the first person to walk by us was a Native American dressed in his full gear with a headdress of fox tails and a mohawk and feathers everywhere, well Jack shouts, "Look! A Indian!" He quickly caught on though and started calling them "American's." Good enough.



In addition to the pow-wow, we did explore the park for a few hours.


I think Jack's favorite part was seeing a huge moose charging down the fence to the other end of his area. When Jack saw him running, he started running and yelling, " A moose! A moose! Look!"


I liked seeing this moose:

He also told me later he liked the little fawn who "kissed" his finger,


and seeing the fish "jump" for food at the hatchery. (John's favorite part too.) Oh, and Anna did fantastic. She loved walking around outside and even posed for pictures,


Jack wouldn't stick his head in the bear, but his little sis was game, though she doesn't look especially enthusiastic here. By the end of the day, we were all exhausted!


Especially Anna. (Though, we definitely were up to stopping for some local ice cream. If I had had my camera with me you would see a sleeping Jack, covered in chocolate ice cream. Along with his shirt, hat and carseat. All covered!)
